«Σὺν Ἀθηνᾷ καὶ χεῖρα κίνει»: With Athena… Move Your Hands Too

Being born and raised in Greece allowed me to grow up with the stories of Greek mythology. They became part of my childhood, like the tales we hear when we are young, and their archetypes took root in my way of thinking. Years later, when I began studying astrology, I found them again through a different language: the language of symbols.

The proverb that best reflects the way I think, and that guides me whenever I interpret a natal chart, is this:

After a violent shipwreck, a man struggled to stay afloat in the middle of a stormy sea. Exhausted and convinced that his own strength would not be enough, he prayed to Athena, the goddess of wisdom, asking her to save him. While waiting for a miracle, he stopped swimming and began to sink. Then Athena appeared to him and said: «Σὺν Ἀθηνᾷ καὶ χεῖρα κίνει»“With Athena… move your hands too.” The man realised that the goddess’s help was not meant to replace his own effort, but to inspire it. He regained his courage, began to swim again, and found the strength he needed to reach the shore.

This ancient proverb contains an essential teaching. Divine wisdom does not act instead of us; it works through us. Inspiration needs our decisions, knowledge must be put into action, and our potential only comes alive when we choose to use it. Athena represents intelligence, discernment, and strategy, yet even under her guidance we must still move our own hands. Life does not ask us to wait passively for destiny to unfold; it invites us to take part in it consciously.

Perhaps this is also one of the keys to understanding astrology. A natal chart does not dictate an unchangeable destiny, nor does it determine what will inevitably happen. Like Athena, it reveals our talents, our challenges, our resources, and our possibilities. It sheds light on parts of our nature that often remain hidden. Yet each person decides how that potential will be expressed. Understanding a natal chart is like receiving a compass, not a map with the route already marked out. The symbols can guide us, but we are the ones who choose the path and take each step along the way.
